In a city filled with architectural husks, this is one of the most spectacular. Miraculously, it has benefitted from a renovation that has not yet decayed, so it is eerily pristine. Walking through it feels like inhabiting a ghost space, both a relic of the past and a future that never happened. There is a hotel and coffee shop and library shop barnacled to one end, a post office, and a couple of restaurants, but mostly, it is epically vacant, floors and floors of intricate blank space, a backdrop for wedding photo shoots, a passageway for downtown workers, and a place of awe for the rare tourist who wanders in. It's a space for dreamers--when you wander in, it's impossible not to wonder what will happen to it.
