Is the opening morning of the ACE book sale my favorite day of the year in Cleveland? Emphatically yes. On the first weekend after Memorial Day, a temporary wonderland appears: tens of thousands of books, art books, albums, CDs, and old magazines are offered for sale at shockingly good prices. I pay the $25 preview fee, and it is still worth it--I always find a cartload of treasures (actual cartloads: we take the collapsible wheely wagon and the silver Hulken). A true wonderland of de-accessioned library books and donated professorial libraries, as well as ephemera, including sheet music. And they reduce the prices as the weekend continues; on Monday, you can fill a box for $10 (used to be $5; inflation is real). It's currently in a bit of a smaller space, but I hope it returns to the airy expanse of Adelbert Gym once the renovations there are done.
