Tucked away in the Payne Whitney Mansion on the Upper East Side, just down the street from the Met, is a strong contender for the most beautiful bookstore in New York. The focus is on works in French (it's part of the French Embassy's Villa Albertine), so an excellent place to get your copy of the Goncourt journals.
